SubjectMy Dad Joe Gold
CommentGreeting Lions Club of Bondi Members,

My name is John Gold, son of Joe Gold, one of your members who passed on some years ago. I was just looking at your website ... well done, very impressive!

I was just thinking of how much my father loved your Christmas Cake project ... in fact how much he loved the Lions Club. In his retirement years you really gave him a purpose ... he loved it so much! I was just remembering how I used to help him organise the Christmas cakes in his garage at Bondi, and how, as we'd walk through Bondi Junction together on the odd occasion, he would be forever "hustling" ... trying to sell cakes to all and sundry. (Sometimes I think people would cross the road when they saw him coming!)

I was remembering how proud he was when he came home and announced how his sales had broken some sort of record. He really took it so much to heart, but loved every minute of it. You not only do a wonderful job out there in the community, but you also do a wonderful job for your members - particularly folk like my Dad, who craved purpose.

I was also remembering how, when I was president of Bankstown Lions Club many years ago, I rang Colin Bloch and asked him to contact my Dad to discuss membership with him, despite protestations from Dad that "I don' need that bloody rubbish!"

I know many of your more senior members will remember Dad. I pray that you do.

Which leads me to the purpose of this email. I can't help thinking that some kind of public acknowledgement of past (deceased) members on your website would be a wonderful token of both appreciation and respect. I looked at your website for the sole purpose of 'connecting' with Dad, whom I am missing enormously on this cool Gold Coast Sunday morning. When I was thinking of how I could see his name somewhere, your club immediately came to mind. I was so disappointed when I couldn't find him.

It seems to me to be a fair request, in light of the time Dad spent with you. I'm sure that relatives of many other former members would also be thrilled to know of their loved one's inclusion on your website. Funny, isn't it, that little things can mean so much when someone you love is no longer there.

I know that you are all extremely busy, and I will fully understand if you are unable to comply with my request. However, by my having "put it in your lap" you might wish to consider this for the future.

Many thanks to you all. Keep up the great work.

JOHN GOLD
