| Subject | Host a Blood Drive |
| Comment | June 18, 2008 Dear Lions Club: I am writing about the prospects of the Lions Club hosting blood drive. It is essential for the Blood Center – and all Rhode Islanders – that we host blood drives throughout our state to assure that we are able to collect the 240 to 280 pints of blood needed daily by patients who are hospitalized in our community. Without the participation of organizations like yours it would be impossible for us to meet our daily blood needs. Research also shows that companies and organizations that participate in community activities enjoy greater customer loyalty, and higher productivity among employees. We either hold our drives on a donor coach – a bus – that is fully self-contained, or at an inside site, if one is available that is large enough. In both cases, the Blood Center brings all materials and personnel. We are fully insured and can provide a host business or organization with a copy of our insurance certificate. There is no cost to the hosting organization. What we look for from our sponsors is their support and help recruiting donors. Thank you for considering hosting a drive. Please contact me by phone or e-mail. Sincerely, Renelda Simmons Communication Assistant Rhode Island Blood Center 405 Promenade Street Providence, RI 02908 1-401-248-5630 rsimmons@ribc.org |

| Subject | Ataxia |
| Comment | My name is Bob Coffey and I have Ataxia. You have probably never heard of this ailment because it is an extremely rare neurological disorder. The virus that normally causes shingles made a new virus that did significant nerve damage throughout the last side of my cerebellum leaving me with no coordination, poor vision and wheelchair bound. Although I have constant pain I must admit that it is controlled by medication. I have had this disorder for ten years. I belong to several support groups and on Thursdays I volunteer at the VA Medical Center. I have been on the list for a service dog for just under three years and I received a telephone call telling me that they have the correct dog that will meet my needs. The expense of a well-trained dog is $6500.00. Being totally disabled I am living on SSDI but I am prepared to give them $500.00 towards the expense. I am hoping that your Lyons Club could help. Thank you for reading this. |

| Comment | 2004 marks our 40th year of providing services to more than 1200 Kent County adults and children with developmental disabilities & their families. As part of the celebration we will be holding an employee recognition cookout on Saturday August 28th at the Masonic Youth Center in Warwick. The Trudeau Center is Warwick's third largest employer with more than 500 staff. The picnic will focus on staff in thirty classifications, yet focusing on those in the direct care categories, who work tirelessly, seven days per week, often becoming family to those we support. I have accepted the challenge of getting event sponsors as there is no budget for this event. It would be a tremendous help if your lodge could consider a $500 donation to help offset the cost of food items and small (coffee cup) employee gifts. I would be more than willing to speak with you regarding this request. My telephone number is 739-2700 ext. 278. The Trudeau Center thanks you for your consideration. Sincerely, Ed Egan |
