SubjectLions Basketball Clinic
CommentDear Steve:

My name is John Heise and I work with former NBA basketball player Dan Godfread putting together fundamental basketball clinics for boy and girl basketball players. The reason I am sending you this e-mail is because we are looking to expand Dan’s basketball clinics all around the country. We would like to use these clinics as fund raisers for the Lions Clubs around the nation.

We have run these clinics over the past couple of months in the Rhinelander/Northwoods area with great results. We do not charge a fee for these clinics they are free to the participants. The money we raised to cover Dan’s fees came from local business sponsors. We normally received $2,000 to $3,000 in sponsorship fees per clinic, with each business chipping in $100.00 towards the clinic. We did ask the participants to donate a non-perishable food item for the local food pantry and to bring used eye glasses and hearing aids for the lions. Because of this, we were able to make these donations to the local food pantry and Lions Club.

We would now like to work with the Lions Club to help you raise money for your club. I have great respect for what the Lions Clubs do and have accomplished. I have a daughter with a birth defect in her right eye and I am very sensitive to eye problems because of this and I applaud the job the Lions Clubs have done with their eye and glasses program. I feel this fund raiser is a way we can help support your club. I also have many friends and relatives who belong to the lions.

Dan Godfread has played basketball his whole life. He attended a small High School outside of Rockford, IL and went on to star at Evansville University in Indiana. From there Dan played pro ball with the Minnesota Timber Wolves and the Houston Rockets.
He also played CBA basketball with Rockford and New Jersey for 3 years and he finished up his professional career playing basketball in Europe (mostly Spain) and Africa for 6 years. He puts on a 2 to 3 hour clinic that is hands on intensive and which allows the participants to play games for at least a ½ hour after instruction. Dan also talks about his experience playing basketball around the world. The children have loved the clinics and if you need them we have references for Dan’s clinics from clinic attendees and coaches.

Dan started doing basketball clinics and camps about 4 years ago and would charge $80.00 to $120.00 per person for a 10 hour clinic over 3 to 4 days. Dan realized that this price prohibited many children from attending his valuable clinics. I started working with Dan this past spring to conduct free one day basketball clinics for boys and girls. The results have been fantastic and Dan feels great about giving all children a chance to attend his clinics.

This is what Dan needs to do a local clinic for your club. He charges $500.00 for the clinic, $30.00 for travel fee, a one night’s stay at a local hotel or with a Lions member, and 2 meals. Your club should be able to raise $2,000 to $5,000 from sponsorships and from running a concession stand. If you choose to you can also charge participants for the clinic, we did the clinics for free and it worked out great but that doesn’t mean you have to do the clinics for free. We would need you to secure a gymnasium with basketballs to hold the clinic in and to promote the clinic locally in the newspaper, on radio, and TV.

We plan to be in your area the week of October 20th through October 25th. We would like to hold your clinic on Wednesday October 22nd from 6pm to 8 or 9pm. Dan will sign autographs and will be available for pictures after the clinic for the clinic goers and the general public.

Please review this proposal and let me know if we can run this clinic for you. If you need a different date let me know. If you need to call me, my phone # is 715-362-6079. We look forward to working with the Lions and your club. If we can’t help your club, if you can pass on the name of another club we could help we would be grateful.

Sincerely,

John T. Heise

We wish you the very best for your Club and your community. Give us a visit at the above web address.
